What's Hot This Summer!

So after moving to the desert a few months ago, we have a whole new respect for what’s hot! Walks before 8 am, swimming at night and booties on the dog kind of hot. For this blog we are going to talk about what’s been hot in the design world this summer.

And while we are not big on trends (read: be your own trend!), we admit that we like to change a few things up, especially when they may be things you already have around your house.

Let’s take a look at a few things that are making us feel hopeful, happy and grounded.

All things Coastal~

While this design style always seems to have one foot out the door, we are finding after a year like this, we are craving the comfort in this easy, breezy style.

Mrs. Howard’s Guide to Decorating with the Colors of the Sea

The key to mastering this style to understand what it isn’t. It’s not nautical, or kitschy seashells and netting. You want to avoid the appearance of walking on to Gilligan’s Island after a 3 hour tour.

Instead, think layered and casual. Texture and comfort are key. Keep things informal and add accessories that compliment but don’t match. And think of employing hardworking materials like a performance fabric or natural rugs in sisal.

If folks walk in and want to take their shoes off, you’ve mastered the style!

A grounded color palette~

Colors that bring comfort and a sense of stability are big this year. Not to say that we don’t want a pop of pillow power pink, but we are finding our base layers these days in earthen tones and meaty neutrals.

So think about layering your colors to get that just right feel. Experiment with color in small doses until you feel you have the mix that speaks your love language (my love language is always more color, but hey, that’s just me!)

What’s Old is New, again~

I was told when I first moved out to the Palm Springs area to make sure I left room in every clients budget for vintage. And that has proved to be spot on!

We all know the comforting energy that well loved, meaningful items can bring to our lives along with the positive environmental impact they create. Add in the thrill of the hunt and you have a perfect design style!

Just like with color, the name of the game is layering.

Don’t be shy about mixing periods and going high and low on the budget. This style of design is very forgiving and it expands our possibilities.

And don’t be concerned about bringing in some repo’s. There is no shame in finding a great copy or adding a fun fresh fabric to an old vintage chair.

Technically anything over 100 years old is considered an antique and anything over 20 years is vintage. Should I tell my kids they’re some of my favorite vintage finds?!

Some of our favorite antique and vintage fairs are the Palm Springs Vintage Market and the Brimfield Antique Flea Market

Butterflies are Free~

Can a design trend that’s been depicted in art since 1350 BC be considered a trend? Hardly! And that’s why we say, if YOU like it, it’s not a trend. From the Renaissance period, Dali to modern day, butterflies in art and architecture have been a staple of delicate and exotic design.

Leftbank Art to the Trade

The Butterfly symbolizes change, renewal, hope, endurance and the courage to embrace transformation.

Natural Curiosities To the Trade

We cannot imagine another creature that could so symbolize our future hopes and dreams.

So this summer we invite you to turn up the heat a little bit and give a few of these new old ideas a try in your own home.

And if you need a little help?

Well we are always here to lend a hand.

Joyfully yours,
Renee

Renee was a pleasure to work with and has great vision. We were doing a total rehab of a recently purchased property and she was able to look at a gutted out '50s cottage and turn it into a beautiful mid-century modern home. She understood our budget and timeline and was good about narrowing all our options down to just a few choices. This expedited the process, made it less difficult and more enjoyable. Once the rehab is done, we look forward to working with her again and finish the rest of the rooms.

Renee at Mandeville Canyon Interior Design was simply wonderful to work with. She was able to understand what we were looking for in terms of color, function and design from the moment we first spoke. She's easy to work with, goes above and beyond and delivers an outstanding design.

I highly recommend Renee and Mandeville Canyon Interior Design. I don't think I will attempt to decorate another room in my house without the help of Renee!

Creative, resourceful and one of kind design ideas made this design opportunity with Renee "one of a kind" Have a large or small project? You won't be disappointed!!

Renee not only has an amazingly creative eye, she also directed a massive renovation for us this past year that included the challenges of operating during the pandemic. She put together a team that had an incredible work ethic and brought the project in on-time and on-budget. She's a great listener. When we threw ideas at her, she was never dismissive; quite the contrary, she made them better. Her patience, attention to detail combined with her whacky sense of humor meant we were all able to smile while producing a home that we love. A great talent and a great lady.
