February is the month of red. Not only do we celebrate our love on Valentine's day, but it's heart health awareness month. We thought, with so much emphasis on red, why not take a look at what it means for your interior design?!
I find that people have strong feelings about the color red. They either love it or hate it. Understandably so! Red is an emotionally intense color. Often associated with energy, strength and power. And this month especially, red invokes feelings of passion, desire, and love. Any way you look at it, red makes a statement.
Red is actually my "heart" color. Often times I will ask a client what their "heart" color is. What I am trying to uncover is what color speaks to them most. Funny thing is, your "heart" color might not be your favorite color, it may just be a color that somehow speaks to you. You might never know that red was my favorite color until I walk by some amazing red item and exclaim, " And THAT is why red is the best color in the world!" The funny thing about a heart color is, you don't always use it and a little might go a long way. It's almost like your own little secret, you carry it close to your heart.
As bold of a color as it is, red is actually a very versatile color to work with. It is a nice contrast to neutrals and lighter tones where it can be playful and fun. It can be posh and luxurious when paired with other rich tones. And, dare I say that red is one of the sexiest colors on the color wheel?! In the bedroom, what's more luxurious and sexy than a red velvet headboard?
If I had to describe the boys in my life, I'd have to say they are energetic, passionate, playful and deep...much like how I would describe the color red. Which is why I love seeing boys rooms designed using shades of red. I think it suits them perfectly!
It may surprise you, but red can be used in any room of your home. For some, just a "dab 'll do ya.", while others may prefer to be a bit more "dramatic". You will often see red used in the kitchen or dining room (and in lots of restaurants) because it raises a person’s blood pressure, heart rate, and causes hunger to be more prevalent.
I've had clients hesitate when I present them with the idea of a red couch, or a set of matching red chairs, only to fall in love with them once they see them.
What's more classic than a cherry red door? It's not just for your exterior door anymore. Try painting one of your interior doors red for a change!
