Mirror, mirror on the wall...

I LOVE to decorate using mirrors! Talk about a design element that has the ability to create a dramatic effect! Mirrors can be used in just about every room and can compliment just about every design style there is. Today, mirrors have become more like works of art, with unique frames, shapes and sizes. Just look at this beauty from Palecek! It's one of my favorites!

If you have a space, such as your entryway that does not get a lot of natural light, a large mirror is an excellent solution. It will reflect whatever light there is, plus it gives you the opportunity to check yourself out one more time before leaving your home. ;)

Bathrooms can sometimes present a challenge when it comes to hanging mirrors. You want to maximize the natural light, maintain some privacy, but also be able to see what you're doing while getting ready in the morning! I am working on a bathroom remodel right now where we are installing an entire wall of beautiful tile. So, instead of drilling into the tilework to hang our mirrors, we are going to hang them from the ceiling in a similar fashion to the images below.

I still love to use plate mirrors in the bathroom (yes they are still in style, just pass on the Hollywood style lighting!). You can mount sconces right on the mirror or use the large mirror to reflect a fabulous chandelier, as we did here in this master bath remodel!

What's even better about this master bath is that a when you open up one of the side cabinet doors, there is a telescoping lighted make up mirror...genius!

Have a small bathroom? No problem! You can still use (large) mirrors to make a BIG impact and make the space feel much larger.

I like to use mirrors in the dining room too, as they reflect the candlelight and create a beautiful, romantic ambiance. In this newly designed dining room, our Associate Designer, Heather Nadeau updated the look by adding a large mirror over the sideboard and a pair of lamps. It was a brilliant way to lighten up the room and reflect the natural and artificial light.

Don't you just love how glamorous this dining room feels? The mirror adds just the right touch of sparkle, while reflecting the candlelight, as well as the light from the chandelier and sideboard lights.

Just like artwork, mirrors work very well with hung in multiples. Especially if your room doesn't have many windows, the mirrors can actually trick the eye into thinking that there are more! This design is brilliant, both literally and figuratively!

For a more vintage and eclectic look, skip the matching mirrors and hang several different shapes and sizes. Not matter what style you use, the mirrors will still have the same effect.  Here they will reflect the light and sparkle from the stunning chandelier and cast a flattering glow onto guests.

Using large mirrors displayed together can be an inexpensive way to make an impact. Just look how great these basic, back of the door mirrors look when hung horizontally together. Wow!

Or, supersize them and lean your mirrors against the wall in multiples as they did here in this mid-century modern dining room.

In small spaces, I like to add an oversize mirror to trick to the eye into thinking the space is much larger. Just remember to think about what your mirror will be reflecting. You want to use the mirror to reflect a beautiful view or an other piece of art.

Mirrors of today have taken on a whole new form and function. They can be works of art, or totally utilitarian. They can be used in the traditional sense or hung in a more creative manner and result in an even bigger impact. Visit our Pinterest board, Designing with Mirrors.

Renee was a pleasure to work with and has great vision. We were doing a total rehab of a recently purchased property and she was able to look at a gutted out '50s cottage and turn it into a beautiful mid-century modern home. She understood our budget and timeline and was good about narrowing all our options down to just a few choices. This expedited the process, made it less difficult and more enjoyable. Once the rehab is done, we look forward to working with her again and finish the rest of the rooms.

Renee not only has an amazingly creative eye, she also directed a massive renovation for us this past year that included the challenges of operating during the pandemic. She put together a team that had an incredible work ethic and brought the project in on-time and on-budget. She's a great listener. When we threw ideas at her, she was never dismissive; quite the contrary, she made them better. Her patience, attention to detail combined with her whacky sense of humor meant we were all able to smile while producing a home that we love. A great talent and a great lady.
