Take a look at any of the photos of my interior design work, and you immediately get the sense that I am a girl who loves color! But I cannot tell a lie...lately I have been drawn to the dramatic effect of the color black. I'm not talking just a touch of black here and there, I'm talkin' about using it BIG TIME!
Don't be afraid of the dark! Just look at the amazing effect that the color black can have on your interior design.
Think about how often you wear the color black. Why is that? Is it because it's a classic color that never goes out of style? Is it because you like the sophisticated look it brings to an outfit? Do you choose to wear the color black because it's so versatile? Do you love black because it can be dressed up or dressed down? Do you like how other colors or jewelry "pop" against the backdrop of black? Well, the same is true when you use the color black to design with!
Just look at how the colors from the artwork, accent pieces and rug just jump out at you in this beautifully designed living room. The black wall is the perfect backdrop!
Once again, the black accent wall below surprises us by fading into the background and allowing the artwork be the show stopper here.
Not sure where to begin, or are you feeling a little intimidated? Try using it on your window trim, both inside and out. While, white is always the first "go-to" color for your window trim, why not give your window trim more definition by painting them black? It will instantly create a "frame". Plus, what a fun way to try using black without committing to painting a whole wall or room with such a dramatic hue!
I really, really love how the black window trim breaks from the norm and it has an awesome visual effect on the outside of the home.
Don't be fooled into thinking that dark interior walls are going to make a room feel smaller. It actually has the opposite effect because the dark hue makes the room lines disappear. Just be sure to balance the dark with some light. Whether it's your natural or artificial lighting, light colored ceilings or floors, maybe some contrasting fabric or artwork, just be sure to give it some balance.
If you're starting to feel courageous and want to give this dark hue a whirl, but don't want to commit to using it in your main living space, why not try it in a bathroom? Have fun with it! Give that space a dramatic redesign. Black baths can be either glamorous or they can have a more modern industrial vibe. Both are equally gorgeous!
Did you know that black cabinets are one of the hottest trends of 2016?! You read that right! So, if you are considering remodeling your kitchen, think about adding a touch of black! It's surprisingly versatile. I often think of it as a neutral color without being boring.
High gloss black ceilings and trim have an incredible effect. Even though it's a darker color the reflection of light is stunning.
Wallpaper has come a long way these days (thankfully)! You can easily add endless character to your room by adding some black wallpaper. It adds some texture that paint is not able to bring to the table!
