By now you may have already heard, but they are the Pantone color(s) of the year 2016. It's unprecedented for Pantone to choose not one, but two colors of the year. And these color choices come to us as a bit of a surprise, especially after the bold colors of years past (think: Marsala and Radiant Orchid). In layman's terms they look like baby blue and pink!
So why such a big shift in color choice? Well, according to the color experts at Pantone, there is a trending shift in the way we think. As our society moves toward gender fluidity, pink doesn't necessarily represent something girlie and blue doesn't always mean boy, and these color choices are becoming more and more popular in the fashion and entertainment industries.
In addition, consumers are seeking mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stress. Makes sense, right? Because our lives are so busy, why not surround ourselves with welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security?
By definition, Rose Quartz conveys passion with a sense of composure. It’s persuasive, yet gentle. A warm, embracing tone. Serenity on the other hand is a cooler tone that brings with it a sense of tranquility. It’s weightless and airy. And, it brings about a feeling of respite and relaxation.
So how do you incorporate these hot, “on-trend” colors into your home décor?! The answer may surprise you. At first thought you may think they are too feminine or pastel-ish. We think it all depends on how you use it, and what you pair it with. Both of these colors can easily pair with bright bold colors, metallic and wood tones. Or, you can take the opposite route and pair them with softer hues.
I actually love Rose Quartz. It’s so hard to find a grown-up pink. This one has a bit of brown in it that makes it fabulous! You may not have noticed, but pink looks good on everyone, however, it’s rarely used. Try using Rose Quartz tone in your dining room, living room or bedroom. Pair it with grey or pale brown to tone it down enough to slip its way past most men!
I'm not quite as "wowed" by Serenity. However, blues always seem to be a popular choice among clients. That being said, I think this shade of blue will work well in a bedroom or sitting room where you want to relax, as it invokes a sense of tranquility. I can also see it used in the dining room as warm and elegant backdrop.
Of course there are endless ways you can use these colors in your home. It all depends on how much or how little you want to use. For lots more inspiration, click here to check out my Pinterest board, Pantone color(s) of the year 2016.

Renee was a pleasure to work with and has great vision. We were doing a total rehab of a recently purchased property and she was able to look at a gutted out '50s cottage and turn it into a beautiful mid-century modern home. She understood our budget and timeline and was good about narrowing all our options down to just a few choices. This expedited the process, made it less difficult and more enjoyable. Once the rehab is done, we look forward to working with her again and finish the rest of the rooms.
Renee at Mandeville Canyon Interior Design was simply wonderful to work with. She was able to understand what we were looking for in terms of color, function and design from the moment we first spoke. She's easy to work with, goes above and beyond and delivers an outstanding design.

Renee not only has an amazingly creative eye, she also directed a massive renovation for us this past year that included the challenges of operating during the pandemic. She put together a team that had an incredible work ethic and brought the project in on-time and on-budget. She's a great listener. When we threw ideas at her, she was never dismissive; quite the contrary, she made them better. Her patience, attention to detail combined with her whacky sense of humor meant we were all able to smile while producing a home that we love. A great talent and a great lady.
Rene is amazing! Great customer care and wonderful attention to detail.
