Top Trends for Your Interiors~2025

The interior design trends of 2025 will be shaped by a blend of sustainability, technology, and a return to nature. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern life, people are seeking environments that offer comfort, wellness, and a connection to the natural world. So how can we support these concepts and bring them into our daily lives? Let's dive into the trends for 2025.

1. Biophilic Design: A Deepening Connection to Nature

If you have been a reader of this blog and a fan of our work, you will know that Biophilic design plays an important role in each of our designs. Biophilic design, the practice of incorporating elements of nature into interiors, will be more prominent than ever in 2025. This trend goes beyond adding a few plants or natural materials—it’s about creating environments that foster well-being by integrating nature at every level of design.

  • Why? Studies continue to show that spending time in nature or in nature-inspired spaces has positive effects on mental health, reducing stress and boosting productivity. One study on Forest Bathing has shown that a 30 minute walk in the woods can reduce cortisol levels for an entire month! As people seek peace and grounding in an increasingly hectic world, homes and offices will reflect this desire for tranquility and connection to the natural world.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Indoor Plants: Incorporate a wide range of plants, not just as decor but as integral design elements. Vertical gardens, living walls, and large statement plants like fiddle leaf figs or monstera add texture and color. If you have furry friends in your home, please consult your vet or research plants that are non-poisonous.
    • Natural Materials: Use wood, stone, clay, and organic fibers (like wool and linen) for furniture, flooring, and surfaces. The authenticity of these materials, with their irregularities and textures, helps bring the outdoors inside. Think 5 Earth Elements: Water, Wood, Fire, Metal and Air.
    • Maximize Natural Light: Large windows and open spaces that invite daylight will be key. Skylights and glass doors that lead to gardens will become even more sought after. Studies have show that giving hospital patients, as well as their caregivers, a window with a view of the outdoors, decreases hospital stays and increases a feeling of well being.

2. Sustainable Design: Eco-Friendly Choices and Reuse

Sustainability will continue to dominate interior design in 2025, with an increasing emphasis on reusing materials, eco-friendly manufacturing processes, and low-impact products.

  • Why? As climate awareness grows, there’s a heightened sense of responsibility to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also beneficial for the planet. Consumers will demand more transparency in the sourcing of materials and a reduction in waste. It has become easier to trace the origin of your product and now many companies are posting their environmental statement right on their website.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Upcycled and Recycled Materials: Furniture made from reclaimed wood, repurposed textiles, and upcycled glass will become more widespread. Vintage items will not only be stylish but also sustainable. There exist so many wonderful consignment and vintage shops to explore, so check with your local towns for events, shows, and stores.
    • Energy-Efficient Features: Smart thermostats, LED lighting, and appliances designed for low energy consumption will be essential. Solar panels may even start becoming more common in residential spaces, not just as an exterior feature, but integrated into the home’s design.
    • Natural Paints and Finishes: Opt for low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, finishes, and materials to minimize indoor air pollution. It's easier than ever to find out if your favorite paint brand carries a low or no VOC option.

3. Smart Home Integration and Technology

In 2025, technology will be seamlessly woven into the fabric of interior design. However, the focus will be on intuitive, user-friendly, and aesthetically integrated smart devices that enhance comfort without overwhelming the space.

  • Why? As smart technology becomes increasingly embedded in daily life, interiors will reflect a harmonious relationship between design and innovation. People want tech that enhances their living experience without detracting from the beauty of their homes.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Invisible Smart Tech: Devices like built-in speakers, invisible smart lighting, and voice-controlled systems will be integrated into cabinetry or furniture. The technology should feel like a natural extension of the space, blending in rather than standing out.
    • Personalized Home Automation: Homes will become more intuitive, adjusting lighting, temperature, and even mood based on individual preferences or routines. AI systems may curate music, lighting, and even wall art displays based on time of day, weather, or activity.
    • Sustainability Tech: Solar-powered devices, smart water conservation systems, and air purifiers will not only enhance quality of life but also reduce environmental impact.

4. Maximalism and Bold Expression

After years of minimalism reigning supreme, 2025 will see a resurgence of maximalism—where exuberant colors, bold patterns, and layered textures take center stage. The idea is to embrace individuality and self-expression through design.

  • Why? With the uncertainty of the past few years, many are seeking to create spaces that reflect their personalities, passions, and unique tastes. Maximalism offers a way to break free from uniformity and celebrate diversity in style. As we also embrace the neuro-esthetics of design, we love to see how this trend is playing out in boosting mood and creativity. In our practice, we are also sensitive to over stimulation, so it's important to work with a professional that knows how to maximize this design style.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Vivid Colors and Contrasts: Expect to see deep jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red paired with vibrant oranges, yellows, and pinks. Bold, contrasting colors will be used on walls, furniture, and accents, creating a dynamic and energetic atmosphere.
    • Layered Patterns: Mix geometric patterns with florals, animal prints, and abstract designs. Bold wallpaper, patterned rugs, and decorative cushions will allow for personal flair and creative combinations.
    • Unique Statement Pieces: One-of-a-kind antiques, custom-made furniture, or bold art installations will be essential in a maximalist interior. These pieces will not just serve functional purposes but will be expressive elements that define the personality of the space.

5. Wellness-Centric Spaces: Holistic Interiors for Health

The concept of wellness will extend beyond physical health, moving into mental and emotional well-being. Interior design will focus on creating spaces that promote relaxation, mindfulness, and emotional restoration.

  • Why? With a greater emphasis on self-care and mental health, homes and offices will be designed as sanctuaries. People are looking for environments that support holistic well-being, from sleep to relaxation to productivity.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Calming Colors and Textures: Soft neutrals, muted tones, and pastel hues will dominate. Velvet, silk, and linen textiles will be used to create a tactile experience that promotes comfort and relaxation. When we have a client that may be color adverse, we find that amplifying textural curiosity is a great way to offer variety, without overwhelm.
    • Dedicated Wellness Zones: Spaces for yoga, meditation, or simply unwinding will be integrated into the home. Think of rooms with calming lighting, soft floor cushions, and minimalist design for peaceful solitude. Many of us may not have the space to dedicate for this, so know that a simple cushion, candle and neutral wall can still bring about this sense of calm.
    • Aromatherapy and Air Quality: Scent diffusers, indoor plants, and air purifiers will be common in homes to improve air quality and create a calming atmosphere. Natural scents like lavender, eucalyptus, or sandalwood will add to the relaxing vibe.

6. Retro-Futurism: Blending Past and Future

Retro-futurism will become a dominant design aesthetic, blending mid-century modern with futuristic touches. This look combines nostalgic elements with cutting-edge technology and design, resulting in spaces that feel timeless yet forward-thinking.

  • Why? People are nostalgic for the past but also excited about the future. Retro-futurism reflects this duality, allowing individuals to express a love for vintage styles while embracing innovation.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Retro Furniture: Think of sleek, curving lines and futuristic materials from the 1960s, but updated with modern tech. Pieces like egg chairs, bubble lamps, and futuristic sofas can be combined with smart technology to create a playful yet forward-looking aesthetic. If you know me personally, you will know that there is always an egg chair present in my home. Always!
    • Chromatic Color Schemes: Bold color contrasts, chrome finishes, and geometric shapes will define this style, creating a visually stimulating environment that feels both nostalgic and cutting-edge.
    • Space-Age Accents: Metallic finishes, geometric patterns, and space-inspired elements will add a touch of science fiction to interiors.

7. Textured Surfaces and Artisanal Craftsmanship

In 2025, craftsmanship will be celebrated. Handcrafted elements will take center stage, offering unique textures and a sense of authenticity. Think artisanal ceramics, handwoven textiles, and custom furniture pieces that show the marks of human touch.

  • Why? As people become more conscious of mass-produced goods, there’s a growing desire for one-of-a-kind items that tell a story. Handcrafted pieces provide a tactile experience and a sense of history and individuality.
  • How to Achieve It:
    • Custom Furniture and Art: Commission bespoke furniture pieces from local artisans, or incorporate handcrafted decor items like pottery, hand-woven rugs, or custom light fixtures. These items will stand as symbols of craftsmanship and individuality. There are so many amazing artists on Etsy and the likes. If you love an artist, don't be shy about reaching out to see if they do commissions or now offer high quality prints. You might be surprised to find the answer is yes!
    • Textural Contrast: Mix rough, raw textures with more refined surfaces. Think of pairing smooth marble countertops with hand-carved wooden furniture or woven fabrics against polished metal accents. One of our favorite mix and match tricks is pairing textured or leathered countertops with a glossy Zelige tile.

In 2025, interior design will celebrate a fusion of the organic and the technological, the past and the future. Homes and offices will transform into sanctuaries that reflect our desire for sustainability, wellness, individuality, and connection with nature. By embracing Biophilic elements, integrating smart technology, and investing in sustainable practices, interior spaces will become more than just functional—they’ll become expressions of who we are and how we want to live in an ever-evolving world.

Renee was a pleasure to work with and has great vision. We were doing a total rehab of a recently purchased property and she was able to look at a gutted out '50s cottage and turn it into a beautiful mid-century modern home. She understood our budget and timeline and was good about narrowing all our options down to just a few choices. This expedited the process, made it less difficult and more enjoyable. Once the rehab is done, we look forward to working with her again and finish the rest of the rooms.

Renee not only has an amazingly creative eye, she also directed a massive renovation for us this past year that included the challenges of operating during the pandemic. She put together a team that had an incredible work ethic and brought the project in on-time and on-budget. She's a great listener. When we threw ideas at her, she was never dismissive; quite the contrary, she made them better. Her patience, attention to detail combined with her whacky sense of humor meant we were all able to smile while producing a home that we love. A great talent and a great lady.
